The Military History Museum at Königstein Fortress

From fortress displays to a modern exhibition

Exhibition at the Army Museum of the GDR

From 1965 onwards, the Army Museum of the GDR presented permanent exhibitions on military history at Königstein Fortress titled ‘Military technology and social systems – From the flintlock rifle to the missile’. Initially, only the New Armoury was used for this purpose. In 1969, however, the Army Museum also began using the Old Armoury.

Shortly before reunification, preparations were made for a new permanent exhibition titled ‘Fortresses and fortress warfare 1789–1945’, which was opened in 1990. This exhibition remained on display for nearly 25 years – until the Military History Museum decided to redesign the exhibition.

In addition to the exhibits in the ‘Fascination: The Fortress’ exhibition, Königstein Fortress, home to the Military History Museum in Dresden, also houses numerous other artefacts relating to military history. On loan, these objects complement the exhibitions at Königstein Fortress and offer valuable insights into history.

Modern exhibition at Königstein Fortress

Since 6 June 2020, the exhibition ‘Fascination Fortress’ has been on display at the New Armoury. Through around 200 exhibits, it explores the tension between protection and destruction.
